Scratching my itch

It’s been a while since I wrote some code to scratch purely my own itch. Most of my time is spent writing code to scratch my employer’s itches, and occasionally I get to write little programs that scratch small itches […]

I know!
I know! But Perl 6 scares me a little, mostly because it's an entirely new language. I want to start a project using it, but that should be something I'm able to work on over time as I learn all the quirks of Perl 6.

Also, I'm not sure that the modules I need have been ported to Perl 6.

But I did take this opportunity to upgrade my desktop's Perl 5 from 5.18 to the latest and greatest 5.22 (which is even newer than Perl 6). ;)

That's the big difference about Perl 6: it's not meant as a replacement for Perl 5, like Perl 5 was for Perls 1 through 4. It's a new language inspired by Perl 5, but it's also a complete redesign that strikes off in a different direction. I'm a pretty old programmer--I still think in the programming paradigm popular in the 1970s & 80s--and Perl 6 is shiny and very object-oriented.
